Express & Discard

Express & Discard cocktail art

Flavor Profile: Bright, nutty, citrusy, lightly bitter

Express & Discard is a modern equal parts cocktail that borrows the bones of a Paper Plane and spins it bourbon-forward. Created by bartender Johan (of @whiskeysugarbitters_com), this drink replaces the amaro with orange curaçao and maraschino liqueur for a brighter, fruitier twist.

The name refers to the garnish technique: express the lemon peel for its oils, then toss it. It’s a subtle move that reflects the cocktail’s clean finish and restrained elegance. Easy to build and surprisingly layered, this is a go-to for bourbon lovers looking for something off the beaten path.

Express & Discard

A modern bourbon cocktail created by Johan, the Express & Discard is an equal-parts riff on the Paper Plane. It blends bourbon with orange curaçao, maraschino liqueur, and lemon juice for a crisp, citrusy sip with a subtle nutty edge. The name refers to its garnish technique: express a lemon peel over the drink… and discard it. Balanced, creative, and easy to make — this one’s a standout for bourbon lovers.

Ingredients

  • 0.75 oz Bourbon
  • 0.75 oz Orange Curaçao
  • 0.75 oz Maraschino Liqueur
  • 0.75 oz Fresh Lemon Juice

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.
  • Shake until well chilled.
  • Fine strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  • Garnish with a Luxardo cherry on a cocktail pick.

Notes

Inspired by Johan’s modern twist on the Paper Plane. The “express and discard” technique uses lemon oils for aromatics without leaving the peel behind. This bright, complex riff is perfect for bourbon lovers looking for something fresh and balanced.
