Spicy Dead Lady

Spicy Dead Lady cocktail icon

Flavor Profile: Spicy, smoky, citrusy, bittersweet

The Spicy Dead Lady is a bold equal parts cocktail created by Grant Wheeler and featured in Imbibe magazine. It’s a riff on the classic Corpse Reviver No. 2, swapping gin for mezcal and dialing up the heat with chili bitters and falernum.

This drink is a flavor bomb — smoky mezcal, bitter Aperol, sweet Caribbean spices, and a bright citrus backbone. Perfect for adventurous drinkers and fans of cocktails with a bite.

Spicy Dead Lady

Created by Grant Wheeler and featured in Imbibe magazine in 2016, the Spicy Dead Lady is a bold, smoky, equal-parts cocktail. Mezcal, Aperol, falernum, and lime are lifted by a dash of heat from Hellfire bitters (or chili water).
Sweet, sour, spicy — this one’s got it all.

Ingredients

  • 0.75 oz Mezcal
  • 0.75 oz Aperol
  • 0.75 oz Velvet Falernum
  • 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1 dash Hellfire Bitters

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.
  • Shake until well chilled.
  • Fine strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  • Garnish with a dehydrated lime wheel

Notes

If you don’t have Hellfire bitters, substitute a few drops of chili water or a thin slice of fresh habanero in the shaker.
Pairs beautifully with tacos, sunshine, or bold personalities.
